Common Ankle injuries seen:
-
Ankle sprains: This is a common injury that occurs when the ankle is twisted or turned in an awkward way, causing damage to the ligaments that support the ankle joint. Ankle sprains can cause pain, swelling, and/or instability in the ankle.
-
Achilles tendonitis: This is inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It can cause pain and/or stiffness in the ankle area.
-
Plantar fasciitis: This is a condition that involves pain in the bottom of the foot, often due to inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes.
-
Ankle fractures: A broken bone in the ankle can cause pain, swelling, and/or instability in the ankle joint.
-
Shin splints: This is a condition that involves pain in the front or inside of the lower leg, often due to overuse or improper foot mechanics.
Ankle Injury Treatments:
-
Exercise: Physical therapists may prescribe specific exercises to strengthen the muscles that support the knee joint, improve flexibility and range of motion, and reduce pain.
-
Manual therapy: This may involve hands-on techniques such as massage, joint mobilization, and/or manipulation to help improve knee joint alignment, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve mobility.
-
Modalities: Physical therapists may use modalities such as heat or cold therapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, or traction to help reduce pain and inflammation.
-
Education: Physical therapists may provide education on proper posture and body mechanics to help prevent future injuries.
-
Activity modification: Physical therapists may recommend modifying or avoiding certain activities that may aggravate the knee pain.
-
Bracing: For certain conditions, such as ligament injuries, a physical therapist may recommend the use of a brace to help support the knee joint and improve stability.
